Where do land-conversion projects overlap carbon-rich soils?

How much shared land do MARS and Kulstof2022 show?

Explore the unique land where project polygons meet carbon-rich soils. Examine sketches too, in their own separate totals.

What does it mean?

Overlap shows shared land. MARS projects outside Kulstof2022 may serve other environmental objectives and are no less relevant for that reason.

How it is calculated

MARS project polygons are dissolved into unique physical land and intersected with Kulstof2022 and municipalities. Sketches undergo the same calculation in a separate total. The share uses unique geometric project area as its denominator, not registered project hectares. Carbon classes are dissolved separately; land shared by different classes is shown as ambiguous and counted once. Registered effects are not apportioned by area.

OpenLandData: pinned sources, geometry repair, unique coverage and documented municipality allocation. The validation report records source checksums and reconciliation.

What to keep in mind

  • Geometric areas are calculated in EPSG:25832. Overlapping polygons count once within each dataset.
  • Kulstof2022 is modelled. The map does not determine whether a particular property can or should be taken out of production.
  • Source normalization leaves 94,863 of 1,702,479 Kulstof2022 records empty or without area. The validation report accounts for them; this is not a measure of missing hectares.
  • Small overlaps between municipality boundaries go to the lowest municipality code. Land outside the boundaries is shown as unassigned.
  • Project status does not establish that conversion of the overlapping land is complete.
  • Projects and sketches may overlap each other, but their areas are never added together.
  • The MARS snapshot of 1 September 2026 is compared with the static Kulstof2022 map.
