Understand the data

Metadata

Information describing a dataset's content, origin, quality and intended use.

Definition

Metadata is data about data. For geospatial datasets it usually includes title, responsible organisation, geographic extent, date, update frequency, coordinate system, fields, licence and known limitations.

Why it matters

A map can look convincing without being suitable for a particular decision. Metadata allows users to assess freshness, comparability and responsible use.
