Understand the data

Geospatial data

Data with a direct or indirect reference to a location on Earth.

Definition

Geospatial data is any data that can be placed geographically. Location may be expressed as a coordinate, line, polygon, address or code linked to a place. Satellite imagery, road networks and municipal statistics are all geospatial data.

Why it matters

A geographic reference makes it possible to combine otherwise separate datasets. Doing so responsibly requires compatible coordinate systems, scale, quality and freshness.
