How repetitive is the farmed landscape?

How many equally common crop groups does the landscape resemble?

Explore how evenly field area is distributed across crop groups. The measure describes crop concentration, not biodiversity.

How it is calculated

For each geography, Shannon entropy is calculated from crop-group area shares. Its exponential converts the value into an effective number of groups: 1 means one dominant group, while higher values mean a more even distribution. Rankings require at least 500 ha and 100 fields.

Declared field area is allocated to municipalities. Crop codes are grouped with the reviewed openlanddata taxonomy.

What to keep in mind

  • This is not a biodiversity index and says nothing directly about species or habitats.
  • It distinguishes reviewed crop groups, not every individual crop.
  • A high value can still coexist with large, uniform fields.
