Understand the data

Carbon-rich lowland soil

Lowland soil with high organic carbon content, mapped in Kulstof2022.

Definition

Kulstof2022 maps organic lowland soils in the classes 6–12% and above 12% organic carbon within the top 30 cm of soil. It is a model-based national map.

Why it matters

Drained carbon-rich lowland soils can emit greenhouse gases, so permanent retirement and rewetting form part of the lowland effort. The mapped class is not by itself an assessment of whether a particular project is feasible or eligible for funding.
