Definition
A map layer organises geospatial data by theme and geometry. One layer may show fields as polygons, another streams as lines and a third monitoring stations as points. Layers can be combined without merging the underlying data.
Why it matters
Layers make complex maps manageable and let users control which themes are compared. Visibility and visual styling do not change the source data.
