Coastal catchment

The land area from which water and nutrients drain towards a particular coastal water body.

Definition

A coastal catchment is a hydrological and administrative geography associated with a coastal water body. Under Denmark's new nitrogen regulation, it provides the geography for concepts including the discharge ceiling and discharge limits.

Why it matters

Coastal catchments do not follow municipal, field or property boundaries. A farm or group of fields may therefore intersect several catchments with different nitrogen frameworks.
