Nitrogen discharge limit

The modelled limit for how much nitrogen may be discharged to coastal waters per hectare of field area.

Definition

SGAV's discharge limit is expressed in kg N/ha and forms the basis for a farm's total discharge quota within a coastal catchment. It is a permitted, calculated framework, not a measurement of actual discharge and not itself the farm's quota.

Why it matters

A lower value means a tighter nitrogen framework, not automatically poorer water quality. Preliminary limits may change and must not be used to calculate a particular farm's quota.
