Understand the data

Nitrogen retention

The share of leached nitrogen transformed or retained before it reaches coastal waters.

Definition

Retention describes modelled nitrogen retention from the point where nitrogen leaves the root zone beneath a field until the water reaches the coast. Retention may occur in groundwater and in surface waters such as streams, lakes and wetlands.

Why it matters

With higher retention, a smaller share of leached nitrogen reaches the coast, all else being equal. The value is model-based and cannot by itself determine where land should be converted.
