Definition
A coordinate reference system, or CRS, defines the datum, projection, units and axes used by geographic coordinates. It makes coordinates unambiguous and tells software how separate datasets should align.
Why it matters
Two datasets with identical numbers may appear in entirely different places if they use different coordinate systems. A wrong or missing CRS is a common cause of displaced layers.
