Understand the data

GIS

A geographic information system for storing, analysing and presenting data by location.

Definition

GIS stands for geographic information system. It is both a method and a category of software connecting data with geography. A GIS can manage layers, perform spatial analysis and produce maps.

Why it matters

GIS lets users ask not only what the data shows, but where it occurs, what is nearby and which areas overlap.
