Understand the data

Vector data

Geospatial data represented as points, lines and polygons with explicit coordinates.

Definition

Vector data describes discrete geographic objects through coordinates. Points represent locations, lines represent paths and polygons represent areas. Each object can carry a set of attributes.

Why it matters

Vector data is useful when boundaries and individual objects must be selected or analysed. Its level of detail should match the map scale and analytical purpose.
