Why are not all Marker areas cultivated fields?
The name Marker means fields, but the dataset includes more than production crops, grass and fallow. Some entries concern nature or environmental measures. We reviewed the 300 crop codes present in 2025 and grouped them by what the code describes.

These groups explain registrations. They are not a new official definition of agriculture and are not added up to an alternative percentage of Denmark. Codes without an environmental commitment in their name may still be covered by other environmental schemes.
Four examples of why the code matters
247 and 254 · environmental grass
Grass under an environmental commitment can be rotational or permanent. The word environmental does not itself make the area non-agricultural.
318, 319 and 321 · non-agricultural land
The source explicitly uses a description of non-agricultural land. This is a different registration from environmental grass.
361 · agricultural land ineligible for support
Being ineligible for support does not automatically mean that land is not agricultural.
583 · Christmas trees and decorative greenery
Plantation production is grouped with crops. Forestry and afforestation have a separate group.

Follow the same land-cover definition across four editions. The points represent published years, not annual observations. A percentage-point change is the difference between two shares; relative change measures that difference against the starting value.

Questions about agricultural area
Does fallow count as agriculture?
Fallow is land without a harvested main crop. Official agricultural statistics include fallow, so agricultural area and area with harvested crops are different measures.
Is environmental grass nature or agriculture?
An environmental commitment describes a scheme or management practice. Environmental grass and codes explicitly labelled non-agricultural land must be read separately. A code does not itself establish ecological quality.
Do forests and Christmas trees count?
The land accounts have a separate forest category and include Christmas trees among permanent agricultural crops. In Marker, we show forestry and afforestation separately from plantation production.
Why do I find figures of 58, 60 and 62 percent?
The reference year and definition may differ. Check whether a figure describes agricultural statistics, physical land cover or declared fields. An older figure cannot automatically serve as today’s answer.

How it is calculated
The national answer of about 60% is attributed to Statistics Denmark’s July 2026 agricultural statistics. The map, municipalities and trend use AREALDK2: (D1 + D2 + D3 + D4) / TOT, for 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2024. The national result uses area 93, including cadastral and non-cadastral land. Each municipality uses its own numerator and denominator. Areas in km² are converted to hectares by multiplying by 100. Marker 2025 is summed in integer microhectares across all 616,411 declarations, including unassigned records. Each of the 300 codes has one documented group based on its source name in that year. The grouping explains registrations; it is not a new agricultural definition.

Validation report and source checksumsWhat to keep in mind
- The 2026 agricultural statistics, 2024 land cover and 2025 Marker declarations are three different measures. Differences between them do not show a change over time.
- AREALDK2 reports areas rounded to 0.1 km². Municipalities, categories and national totals may therefore differ slightly through rounding. An observed zero is different from a missing observation.
- Denmark’s total area includes lakes and watercourses, but excludes the sea, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The 98 municipalities are not summed to replace the published national figure; non-cadastral land and Christiansø are retained separately.
- Simplified 2026 DAGI boundaries are used only for display. Percentages come from StatBank areas and are not calculated from the map polygons.
- Marker hectares are summed declared areas, not a geometric union or a measurement of all agriculture. No alternative percentage of Denmark is derived from the groups.
- An environmental commitment does not itself document ecological quality, actual harvest or completed restoration. Support eligibility and agricultural status are different questions.
